Tracking Setting 101

Course Overview:

One of the keys to success in ski touring and splitboarding is your ability to build a safe and efficient skin track. Setting a safe and efficient skin track can be more of an art than a science, the team at Kootenay Backcountry Guides is here to help you take your skin track art to the next level.

Learning Outcomes:

What terrain should you seek and avoid while building a skin track?
Setting the optimal skin track angle.
How to effectively and efficiently build corners.
So you decided to build a corner; now what?
How to use micro features to gain efficiency.
Using your map and the avalanche forecast to select terrain.
Spreading out, why and why not?

Fitness Skills (Up Hill)

Flying Squirrels

Flying Squirrels have been ski touring at least ten times and are confident they can put in a 6.5 hour day of moving in the mountains. They can ski or splitboard 1000 vertical meters (3000ft) on back to back days and travel for 10km while following a track. They keep in shape and want a typical day of ski touring, hanging with friends and having a good time.

Ski Skills (Downhill)

Flying Squirrels

Flying Squirrels have ridden powder in bounds and out of bounds and have tasted what deep powder can be. Flying Squirrels can ride tree runs but enjoy open bowls more. They are confident on a black diamond runs in bounds; however, cliffs and steep chutes might not be their thing. Flying Squirrels are primarily looking for a good time with their squirrel friends and can join most of our courses and tours.

Course Cost:

Pubic Members: This course is $197 +tax per person for the public.

Private Course: $1250 +tax (max 8 people)

KMC Private: $156.25 (+tax)/person (needs a min of 6 people)

KMC can join public courses for 10% off using your KMC discount code (must be active members)
Transportation:

This course will take place at Kootenay Pass. Participants are responsible for transportation to and from the trail head.
