Splitboarding & Ski Touring 101

Course Overview:

New to backcountry touring? We've been there too... In this one-day guided trip, we will show you the ropes of backcountry ski touring/splitboarding. We understand that everyone starts off somewhere and not everyone has friends who have the patience to teach you how to keep up.

This course is all about learning how to utilize your gear, putting skins on efficiently, clipping into your bindings, transitioning quickly, learning how to move uphill efficiently, and we will provide you with some low avalanche risk terrain to practice your skills in. We are passionate about what we do and are eager to get you hooked!

Our Day:

  • The day will take place at Kootenay Pass 30 min East of Salmo. There is great terrain there to practice with your gear in a safe environment.

  • We will meet in Salmo at Dragonfly Cafe at 8:00 am to sign waivers and discuss the day's plan. We will then head to Kootenay Pass once everyone is ready.
    • For people coming from Creston or Cranbrook, we can meet at the top of Kootenay Pass at 9:00 am.

  • After a fulfilling day in the mountains, we will depart from Kootenay Pass 4:00 pm, with the goal of returning to Salmo at 5:00 pm.

  • In the event that there is bad weather and Kootenay Pass might close for avalanche control work, we will go to Whitewater Ski Resort.
