Private Guiding/Custom Trips
A payment of 50% of the total amount is required at the time of booking. The remaining 50% is due 45 days prior to the start of your booking. A credit card is required.

Avalanche Education Courses
All avalanche education course fees are due at the time of reservation. Except for our Hut-Based AST-2 course where our Private Guiding/Custom Trips policy applies

Included in your booking
Pre-trip planning and information on all the amazing opportunities the Kootenays have to offer.
Expert local guiding or avalanche instruction from guides certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, the Canadian Avalanche Association, and the Canadian Ski Guide Association.
Group rescue equipment, including emergency communication devices, 1st aid equipment, maps and GPS devices.


Not Included in your booking
Backcountry Ski/Splitboard Rentals (can be rented from ROAM Shop in Nelson B.C.)
Avalanche Rescue Equipment (can be rented from ROAM Shop in Nelson B.C.)
Lift Ticket
Transportation to and from ski touring and avalanche course locations
Food
Tips/Gratuity. (It is customary in Canada to tip your guides for their service 10-20% of the cost of the trip)
Insurance. (Please see the Cancellation and Emergency Medical Insurance section below.)


Fitness and gear requirements.
In order to travel in the backcountry, you need to meet our fitness and skills requirements for the trip or course you are joining. Please see these descriptions and make sure you meet the requirements. If you are unable to participate due to lack of fitness, you are not entitled to a refund.
You will receive a list of gear requirements when you register for our course or trip. It is expected that you show up with functioning gear. If your gear is not up to standard and does not function during an activity, you are not eligible for a refund. It is possible to rent gear from us at Kootenay Backcountry Guides or Roam shop in Nelson.


Cancelling your booking
If you need to cancel at any time please inform us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call us at (250) 354-7233. We do not provide refunds if you need to cancel your trip or course with us. Occasionally we have a waiting list for a trip or course. If we are able to find someone to take your place we will refund you with a 25% penalty fee*.
*We charge fees because our guides and services are in high demand. By booking with us and then cancelling, you are taking up a spot that someone else could have had.


Kootenay Backcountry Guides cancels the trip or course
On rare occasion, Kootenay Backcountry Guides might cancel our trip due to extreme weather or avalanche conditions or inadequate enrolment of a course. We will not put your safety at risk. If this happens then you get a rain cheque for a later trip/course that is equal to the value of the amount you paid. This rain cheque is valid for 2 years after the date of your trip. If you wish to have a refund instead of the rain cheque, we will provide one minus a 25% administration fee.


Trip Cancellation and Emergency Medical Insurance
Kootenay Backcountry Guides is pleased to recommend Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance from Lifestyle Financial. At an approximate cost of 5% of the total cost of your trip, it is a bargain for your added peace of mind. Note that insurance should be purchased when you make your initial booking payment for your adventure.
We recommend that visitors to Canada and Travelling Canadians out of their home province purchase Emergency Medical Insurance to protect against unexpected hospital and physician’s expenses if you have a medical emergency. This covers sudden and unexpected illness and injury and it includes air and ground ambulance/evacuation to the nearest medical facility.
Ensure that you have adequate medical for the location where your trip is occurring and should include coverage for evacuation or emergency rescue.

Liability and Waivers
In order to travel in the backcountry with Kootenay Backcountry Guides, you are required to sign our backcountry travel waiver before going on any backcountry trip. You will receive a waiver with your booking confirmation email. Please read over and familiarize yourself with it, you will need to sign the waiver in the presence of a representative of Kootenay Backcountry Guides. Anyone who refuses to sign the waiver cannot participate in our services and are not eligible for a refund.
