We are excited to have booked one of B.C.'s premier touring lodges in the Valkyr Mountain range for 2023. Below is important information about our catered guided week at Hilda Hut. About Hilda Lodge

Hilda Hut offers access to 4,000 hectares of terrain in the mid- Valkyr Range, covering 9 unique zones on Mt. Hilda, Mt. Prough, and Mt. McBride. Known for its epic fall line skiing right out the door in the home basin with even more exciting skiing just over the ridgeline! From steep and challenging alpine drops to treed runs through old growth forests, backcountry skiers and splitboarders will be thrilled and challenged by the Hilda terrain.

The lodge is situated at 1,920 meters on the east side of the range. It is a spacious 3 stories and can accommodate 12 guests in 6 private rooms with additional bedrooms for staff. The bedrooms are fully outfitted with quality bedding including down duvets. Hilda Hut also features a large entryway/ drying room, shower, 2 toilets, fully outfitted kitchen, large cold pantry with fridges and freezer, internet access, AC power generated by a micro-hydro plant, and 2 wood stoves, and a separate wood-fired sauna hut with a shower room.

January is known for its big snowfalls and deep pow, mix in January's cold temps and the perfect recipe is there for an unforgettable experience.

The maximum group size is 12 of your shred friends.

Fitness & Skill Requirements

HAVING AN APPROPRIATE FITNESS LEVEL FOR THE TRIP OR COURSE YOU ARE JOINING IS A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF MOUNTAIN SAFETY.

Fitness Level: Flying Squirrel

Flying Squirrels have been ski touring at least ten times and are confident they can put in a 6.5-hour day of moving in the mountains. They can ski or splitboard 1000 vertical meters (3000ft) on back-to-back days and travel for 10km while following a track. They keep in shape and want a normal day of ski touring, hanging with friends, and having a good time.

Ski/Splitboarding Skills: Flying Squirrel

Flying Squirrels have ridden powder in bounds and out of bounds and have had a taste of what deep powder can be. Flying Squirrels can ride tree runs but enjoy open bowls more. They are confident on a black diamond runs in bounds but cliffs and steep chutes might not be their thing. Flying Squirrels are mostly looking for a good time with their squirrel friends and can join most of our courses and tours.

Itinerary

Arrival Day: Jan 8th, 2023

8:00 am: Meet at the Burton Staging Area.
8:30 am: Enjoy a 12-minute flight to Hilda Hut.
11:30 am: Drop our luggage off at the Lodge & head out touring for the afternoon.
4:30 pm: Back at the Lodge for Apres, Sauna, and some R&R.
7:00 pm: Dinner.
10:00 pm: Lights out.

Ski Days: Jan 9th-14th, 2023

7:30 am: Breakfast (coffee is available earlier).
9:00 am: Head out the door for a day of ski touring.
4:30 pm: Back at the Lodge for some Apres and maybe a sauna.
7:00pm: Dinner.
10:00pm: Lights out.

Departure Day: Jan 15th, 2023

7:30am: Breakfast (coffee is available earlier).
8:30am: Grab a few quick ski laps.
1:00pm: Back at the Lodge to pack up.
2:00pm: Catch the shuttle back to the parking lot.

Staging & Directions

Staging Location: Burton, BC

Burton is 45 min from Nakusp B.C. It is recommended to stay in Nakusp the night before this trip. Weather permitting, occasionally flights are delayed due to poor weather conditions for as much as a day, please plan accordingly

THE STAGING AREA IS LOCATED 2 KM SOUTH OF BURTON, BC, just off of REBAZZO RD. on the beach road approximately 400 m FROM THE HIGHWAY. For route planning, road conditions, and travel times consult www.drivebc.ca

FROM REVELSTOKE:

TAKE HWY 23 SOUTH TO NAKUSP THEN CONTINUE SOUTH ON HWY 6 (WEST) TO
BURTON,
CONTINUE OVER THE CAUSEWAY;
TAKE THE FIRST RIGHT ONTO REBAZZO RD.
AT THE SHARP CORNER CONTINUE STRAIGHT ONTO THE BEACH RD.

TRAVEL TIME

PLEASE ALLOW: 45 MINUTES FROM REVELSTOKE TO THE FERRY LANDING;
25-MINUTE FERRY RIDE;
45 MINUTES TO NAKUSP AND 35 MINUTES TO THE STAGING
AREA.

FROM NELSON / CASTLEGAR:

TAKE HWY 3A TO THE PLAYMOR JUNCTION.
TURN NORTH ON HWY 6 (WEST) TO NAKUSP
(80KM).
TAKE THE FIRST LEFT EXIT TO NAKUSP BUSINESS CENTER AND THEN LEFT AGAIN AT THE NEXT INTERSECTION TO BURTON.
CONTINUE SOUTH ON HWY 6 (WEST)
PAST BURTON, OVER THE CAUSEWAY, THEN TAKE THE FIRST RIGHT ONTO REBAZZO RD.
AT THE SHARP CORNER CONTINUE STRAIGHT ONTO THE BEACH RD.

TRAVEL TIME:

PLEASE ALLOW 2.5 HOURS FROM CASTLEGAR OR NELSON TO STAGING
AREA.

FROM KELOWNA AIRPORT OR VERNON:

FROM KELOWNA - TAKE HWY 97N TO VERNON.
AT THE FIRST MAIN INTERSECTION EXIT RIGHT THEN RIGHT AGAIN. THIS WILL PUT YOU ON HWY 6 EAST TO THE ARROW LAKES FERRY AT NEEDLES / FAUQUIER.
CONTINUE NORTH AFTER GETTING OFF THE FERRY
APPROXIMATELY 20 KM. LOOK FOR REBAZZO RD ON YOUR LEFT.
AT THE SHARP BEND TURN LEFT ONTO THE BEACH ROAD.

TRAVEL TIME:

ALLOW 2.5 - 3 HOURS FROM THE KELOWNA AIRPORT (OR 2 HOURS FROM
VERNON) TO THE NEEDLES FERRY LANDING.
THE FERRY RUNS EVERY HALF-HOUR ON THE QUARTER HOUR FROM NEEDLES. FROM THE EAST LANDING TO THE STAGING AREA
TAKES 15 MINUTES.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING:

Backcountry ski gear including:
- Alpine Touring skis, Telemark skis or split board, skins, poles in good repair and ski boots that have been broken in
- Avalanche safety gear – transceiver, shovel, probe
- 35-40 L day pack (Balloon pack, Avalung, ABS or another avalanche pack - optional)
- Gortex jacket, Gortex ski pants or other snow repellent fabric, down or puffy jacket, base and mid-layers, 2 pair of ski gloves, toques, buff, ball cap
- Ski goggles, helmet
Thermos, water bottle (or hydration pack), Re-useable lunch sack
Toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste.
Extra socks, long underwear, and a couple of changes for the week.
Hut booties or sandals with non-marking soles for the lodge, deck, and trip to the
sauna
Comfortable clothes for wearing in the hut. Swimsuit for the hot tub and sauna
Mask for a helicopter rides and lodge use; non-medical paper masks are available at the lodge
Prescriptions, medications, and basic 1st aid supplies that you might need
Digital devices are pre-loaded with books, magazines, music, games or films.
Sunglasses, reading glasses, headlamp, writing pad, pens and pencils
Camera and charger; VHF or family band radios with charger
GPS (self-guided groups)
