Fall Hiking: Golden Glory and Crisp Air

IMG-20221016-WA0011 Fall Hiking

Summer alpine flowers are beautiful, but have you seen valleys turn to gold? Fall hiking in the Kootenays is something that should be on every avid hiker's bucket list and this post highlights why.

Golden Larches

By mid-October (sometimes earlier), the larches turn a brilliant gold, creating a stunning contrast against the evergreen trees and blue skies. This spectacle is a must-see for hikers and photographers. If you are really lucky you will catch a dusting of snow on the golden larches.

Moderate Temperatures

The cooler, crisp air makes for comfortable hiking conditions. It's a refreshing change from the summer heat. You can finally enjoy the warmth of the sun without feeling like you'll overheat or get sunburnt. But make sure to pack a warm layer to stay comfortable during a snack break or for the way back down.

Beautiful Weather

Fall in the Kootenays often brings stable, dry weather with minimal precipitation, making it a reliable season for hiking. The smokey sky returns to its magnificent blue, and the trails are dust-free thanks to the heavy morning dew.

Tips:

  • Dress in layers to adjust to the changing temperatures throughout the day. You can expect anything from cold near zero temperatures in the mournings to 20+ degree temperatures in the afternoon.
  • Be aware of shorter daylight hours and plan your hikes accordingly to ensure you return before dark.
  • Always leave a trip plan with someone at home
